LOCATION:  Rapid City, SD
 
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Determine projects that are necessary for load growth accommodation on the Black Hills Power and Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power electric distribution systems. Investigate strategies to improve the reliability of the electric distribution system in a cost effective manner.
 
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:    Manager, Reliability & Planning
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Compile historical distribution load data and forecasts used for planning study analysis.
  • Perform circuit analysis using distribution electric model and maintain connectivity and equipment database.
  • Insure data input into system model is accurate. Work with GIS department to make sure processes are in place to keep the data accurate.
  • Monitor actual loading of distribution system and compare to assumptions made in the planning process to determine exactly when projects are needed.
  • Develop performance measuring metrics for electric distribution system.
  • Perform distribution system sectionalizing studies.
  • Assist operations departments with capital and reliability project planning.
  • Assist operations departments on power factor correction issues.
  • Provide after hours support to operators of Company systems.
  • Complete short and long range plans for inclusion in strategic plan.
 
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide technical support for preparation of short range and long range strategic plan for electric distribution (below 69 KV).
  • Contribute to the creation of department budgets and financial tracking activities.
  • Support system operations personnel during outages and emergencies.
  • Support overall corporate goals, projects, and initiatives as they may be assigned from time to time.
  • Attend relevant industry conferences.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
  • Establish professional relationships and work effectively with other internal departments, utilities, vendors, consultants and government agencies.
  • Work closely and coordinate with transmission planning and operations personnel.
 
EXPERIENCE:
  • 3 years of electrical engineering or related operational experience required.
  • Utility experience preferred.
 
EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering required.
  • Power emphasis preferred.
 
KNOWLEDGE:
  • Working knowledge of utility distribution and transmission electrical system design philosophy and equipment operation.
  • Understanding of electric circuits and engineering analysis.
  • Understanding of cost/benefit and life cycle analysis.
 
SKILLS/ABILITY/OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite - Excel, Word, Power Point and Outlook.
  • Ability to learn and maintain proficiency with new systems and software as technology evolves.
  • Skills in leadership and participation in cross functional utility teams.
  • Strong ability to document and track projects and work goals.
  • Detail-oriented.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Requires limited travel within the utility service territory and for support of corporate subsidiaries.
  • Perform work on or in close proximity to energized electrical facilities.
